Chapter 6: Progressions

6 lessons

Progressions covers arithmetic progressions (AP) — sequences with a constant difference between terms, including the nth term and the sum of n terms — plus an introduction to geometric progressions (GP), where each term is multiplied by a constant ratio instead. 2, 5, 8, 11... is an AP with common difference 3; 2, 6, 18, 54... is a GP with common ratio 3.

Confusing the nth-term formula with the sum-of-n-terms formula is a frequent mix-up, as is mistaking common difference (AP) for common ratio (GP). This chapter introduces pattern-based reasoning that's genuinely different from the equation-solving in earlier chapters — recognising and extending a sequence rather than solving for an unknown.
