Read the diagram first

Confusing corresponding angles with alternate angles, or assuming an angle pair is equal when the lines involved aren't actually parallel, causes most of the errors in this chapter — two angles on the same side of a transversal only relate predictably when the two lines it crosses are genuinely parallel. Every relationship proved here becomes a building block in later proofs, particularly in Triangles and Quadrilaterals — recognising an angle pair instantly, rather than working it out from scratch, is what makes those later multi-step proofs manageable.
